The Visian ICL implant by Staar Surgical Inc., may be an option for you!  The Visian ICL is actually an implantable contact lens that is surgically inserted into the eye. The patient experiences have been amazing and patients often end up with very clear vision. If you are a highly myopic eye care patient please see us at San Diego Eye & Laser Center for a Visian ICL consultation. Our eye center is one of the very few Visian ICL San Diego locations. About Visian ICL

The Visian ICL is a long lasting solution for refractive error. Through its myopia treatment, the Visian ICL offers excellent quality of vision.

The Visian ICL™ procedure has been repeatedly improved through years of rigorous studies and continued refinement. This lens is a posterior chamber implant that is situated behind the iris and in front of the natural crystalline lens. It is also known as a Phakic IOL. The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, which means that a patient has surgery and leaves the same day.

TheVisian ICL™ is made with Swiss precision from Collamer. Collamer, a collagen copolymer is a proprietary biocompatible material formed from pure collagen and a hydrophilic copolymer with a UV absorbent chromophore. This material has been used to treat the eye for over 15 years now and considered very safe.

The Visian ICL Advantages

  • Wide Treatment Range The Visian ICL has proven to be effective in patients within a wide range of refractive errors. In fact, the Visian ICL can correct myopia from as low as -3.0 diopters to -16.0 diopters and reduce myopia from -16.0 diopters up to as high as -20.0 diopters with or without astigmatism. Before now, some of these individuals were not candidates for surgical eye correction. Clinical studies have shown how the Visian ICL is truly a breakthrough myopia treatment in terms of vision correction results. Because implantation of the phakic IOL does not require any structural alteration of the eye, results are predictable and very stable 3. Read more about the results of ICL corrective eye surgery.
  • Quality of Vision – The Visian ICL produces not only improved visual acuity, but also excellent visual quality. Many patients experience the "Wow" factor when they experience the immediate improvement in the quality of their vision.
  • Biocompatibility – Collamer, the 100 percent pure collagen copolymer lens material of the Visian ICL, is not viewed as a foreign object by the body's immune system.
Versatility – The Visian ICL offers a wider treatment range for myopia than LASIK and PRK procedures.
  • Simplicity – Unlike traditional contact lenses, once the Visian ICL is implanted in the eye, there is no additional maintenance needed.
  • Lens Placement – The placement of the Visian ICL makes the lens invisible to the patient and any observer.
  • Removable – The Visian ICL was designed to be permanently placed in the eye. However, the lens can be removed if a patient's vision changes or if it otherwise needs to be removed or replaced.

What Happens During the Visian ICL surgery?

Prior to the Visian ICL eye surgery, an ophthalmic eye surgeon will make two microscopic holes in the iris. Your eye will be numbed with a light, topical or local anesthetic. Once the eye is numbed the surgeon will make 2 side port incisions and one main temporal incision that is critical to the insertion process. Next the surgeon will insert the ICL through the main temporal incision and place the lens behind the iris and in front of the crystalline lens. This insertion procedure is typically performed one eye at a time. There is very little discomfort and normally no pain associated with the procedure. Some drops or perhaps oral medication may be prescribed and a visit is usually scheduled the day after surgery. Patients will be advised to arrange for someone to drive them to and from surgery.

Are you a Candidate?

Individuals who suffer from extreme nearsightedness will have a solution for their poor vision. The ICL provides an opportunity to those individuals who are not candidates for LASIK eye surgery. Some people cannot have LASIK for reasons ranging from high prescriptions to thin corneas. The ICL will now give these patients the opportunity to experience the same lifestyle change that LASIK has brought to millions.

You're likely a good candidate for ICL if:

  1. You have extreme to moderate nearsightedness
  2. You have thin corneas and are not a LASIK candidate
  3. You have a history of dry eye
  4. You have large pupils

The Visian ICL Proven Track Record

Over 15 years of research and development has made the Visian ICL a leader in phakic IOL technology. There have been over 125,000 Visian ICL implants performed worldwide. And when asked about the procedure, over 99% of the patients were highly satisfied.
